I'm so glad I stumbled upon this quote. It sums up my reasoning as to why gay marriage shouldn't be something to vote on.

I'm a big fan of Ayn Rand but knowing what little I do, I don't think that her views could be shared the way you are trying to. And if I'm not mistaken, voting on gay marriage isn't a vote on TAKING AWAY a right, it's to PROVIDE a right that they don't have right now...or am I mistaken somehow?
